August 2006 ~ Day 1 Visions

Hundreds of common elements bind us together as humans. We are workers and lovers, dreamers and believers. And we feel our best when we can envision a future unhindered by worry and fear. But human burdens are real. And they too are common, binding elements. We sympathize with others who face difficulties beyond what would be the “normal” challenges in life. Together we hope for brighter days.

And then there are those times when we’re able to “fly” – moments, even days, when we are able to free ourselves from the normal burdens of life and float, it would seem, in space.

Consider the example of falling in love. Do you recall those wonderful feelings that erased all other cares and concerns? It was a time when the thought of another was so strong that nothing else in the world mattered. Remember? You wanted only to enjoy the pleasures of being with her or him.

There are also those feelings of creative power and energy that move the mind beyond the malaise so common in today’s helter-skelter world.  It could be a new idea or a newfound interest that spurs the mind. Lifting the spirit might be the understanding of a simple and beautiful principle or a sense of unity with God.

Day 1 Guide

Think about tomorrow. Consider how to prepare your mind to recognize the many instances of beauty that pass before you.

August 2006 ~ Day 2 Thought

Some people are better “on their feet” than others. They’re quick and have definite opinions. They’re not cloudy about anything, and they have answers for most everything. Me, I do better if I have a little time and space to think. It usually takes me a while to come up with an answer or a solution to a problem. Some call me a procrastinator because I like to “chew” on an idea or a question for a while. But most of the time I’m not really putting off a decision or an opinion. I just like to think about it for a while. I don’t like to give quick answers. I like to look at all the angles.

Some people talk faster than others. I don’t do well around fast talkers. I don’t even feel like I can think as fast as they can talk. And I definitely can’t talk as fast as they can. I have a hard enough time just finding the right words to communicate my thoughts. Words sometimes get stuck in my head, and it takes me a while to locate them. I find that fast talkers usually don’t have the patience for “word-diggers” like me.

I think it’s good that the world has a lot of quick thinkers and fast talkers. I’m just not one of them. Give me a little time.

Day 2 Guide

Thinking is a process. It takes time – more for some than others. Remember this: the quality of a thought is not a product of how quickly it was produced.

August 2006 ~ Day 3 Accessibility

Feeling Perfect

“How are you doing?” I asked a passerby at a recent conference.

“Just right,” he said with a smile.

I love a comment like that, don’t you? It’s like an open invitation that makes you want to know more. “Just right” – that means perfect, doesn’t it? It’s quite different from an answer like, “All right” or “Okay.”  On hearing it, I immediately wanted to know exactly what it was that made the man feel perfect.

Day 3 Guide

Don’t settle for less than feeling perfect. Naturally, there will be days of sorrow and pain. But too many of us allow otherwise great days to be downgraded by our worries and fears.  Think today about the things that might be stopping you from having one of the best days that you can imagine.

August 2006 ~ Day
 4 Sympathy

Duck Soup

I look around and watch as some people seem to get things done so quickly and easily. How do they do it? What does it feel like to be so productive? It takes me a long time just to work up the motivation to get things off the ground.

I must say, however, that I’m more disciplined now than I used to be. I think I’m improving. I’m a bit “harder” on myself than I used to be. I sense that time is running out, and I feel the need to get on with things. Nowadays, I’m constantly asking myself, “If I don’t do it now, then when?”

On the surface, it looks like the super-productive people get things done without much effort, doesn’t it? But I know that’s not really the case. While it’s true that one person may work smarter or with greater confidence than another, achievement for anyone requires work. It’s a requirement for even the super-productive.

When I was little, my mother used to take me and my sister to a small pond where there were some ducks. I remember thinking of how graceful those ducks looked as they swam across the water to retrieve the pieces of bread that we’d thrown to them. I remember the day when the sun was shining brightly and I caught of glimpse of the swimming ducks’ webbed feet beneath the surface of the murky water. I discovered that their graceful dance across the top of the water was fueled by some very serious footwork.

Day 4 Guide

Beneath the murky waters of life, you’ll find the reality of accomplishment. Don’t be fooled by appearances. Keep your mind on your game, and keep on plugging.
